EarthViewer is an invaluable tool for exploring Earth's geological past. It offers users a unique opportunity to delve into the planet's history, spanning billions of years, and gain insight into various aspects such as continent and ocean formations, climate patterns, sea level changes, and future predictions.
Using the latest scientific research and intuitive design, EarthViewer allows users to navigate through time, witnessing the evolution of beloved landmarks like Greenland or New York City, or tracking the incredible journey of iconic fossils like Tiktaalik. By layering shifting continents with data on atmospheric composition, temperature, biodiversity, day length, and solar luminosity, users can gain a comprehensive understanding of Earth's dynamic nature.
The numerous features of EarthViewer include continental reconstructions with accompanying data dating back billions of years, sea level maps spanning 21,000 years into the past and 8,000 years into the future, global temperature maps covering more than a century, and the ability to manipulate and zoom to any location on the globe. Additionally, users can trace back the locations of modern cities over 500 million years and explore in-depth articles on significant geological and biological events in Earth's history. The platform also provides clickable details on geologic eons, eras, and periods, along with automated play modes and engaging animations between globe and flat map projections.
Developed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), a renowned non-profit medical research organization and one of the country's largest philanthropies, EarthViewer is part of HHMI's BioInteractive initiative. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and the general public through interactive web features, short films, virtual labs, and scientific animations. Recognizing the pivotal role that teachers play in fostering future scientists and promoting scientific literacy among the public, the BioInteractive team collaborates with educators to create engaging media that aligns with the science curriculum.
